Back-to-School Around NTHU and NYCU: A First Lot at Student Prices

QUICK ANSWER A freshman's first lot: Tsinghua Night Market on Jiangong Road at NT$150–250 a head, a 40-minute foot massage on Guangfu Road Section 2 at NT$500–700, then a drink on Puding Road or Jinshan Street at NT$500–700. All three stations come to about NT$1,500. Skip Jiangong Road on the first Friday of term, and if you drink, leave the scooter and hail a ride.

Yield first.

At student prices, a night around NTHU and NYCU yields about seventy percent: a full stomach, a massage, a drink, all three done in one evening for under NT$1,500. The other thirty percent is lost to bad timing and queues. This piece is about recovering that thirty.

September term start pushes Jiangong Road from summer-break low load to full load inside two weeks. Same line, three times the wafer starts.

Before the lot: two gate coordinates

The NTHU main gate is at No. 101, Guangfu Road Section 2; the NYCU Guangfu campus is at No. 1001, Daxue Road. The two schools face each other across Guangfu Road, and the stretch of Jiangong Road between them is East District’s Tsinghua Night Market. A few minutes on foot from the NTHU side gate, about five minutes by scooter from NYCU Guangfu.

The Blue and Red bus lines both run along Guangfu Road and reach Hsinchu Railway Station in about twenty minutes. That is your trunk line home for the whole night — note the last departure before you leave.

STEP 1: Jiangong Road, NT$150–250 a head

Stalls at Tsinghua Night Market turn over fast; what is there this year may be gone next year, so no names here, only categories. Taiwanese fried chicken, braised snacks, vermicelli soup, egg-crepe stands, plus the drink shops: roughly NT$100 a stall, two stalls and a drink comes to NT$150–250. Posted prices prevail.

To save, one main dish and a roadside drink keeps you under NT$120. To eat everything, NT$250 is the ceiling — anything past that on Jiangong Road means you ate too much, not that it cost too much.

One warning: do not queue on Jiangong Road on the first Friday of term.

Freshmen, clubs and orientation groups all press into the same street on the same night, popular stalls start at twenty minutes, and from seven to nine the road barely moves. Switch to Tuesday or Wednesday, or Friday after 9:30pm — same stalls, a third of the wait.

STEP 2: Guangfu Road, a 40-minute test station

Fed, walk to Guangfu Road Section 2. This stretch has the densest run of massage shops near the two campuses. Student pricing means a 40-minute foot massage at NT$500–700; the shop’s posted menu is the final word.

放輕鬆指壓坊 (Fang Qing Song Zhi Ya Fang) on the third floor of No. 350, Guangfu Road Section 2: 665 reviews, rated 4.6, the closest to the NTHU gate — phone ahead on weekend nights. Toward the station, at No. 362-22, Guangfu Road Section 1, 詩嫚特Smarter spa 紓壓 (Smarter Spa) has 499 reviews and a 4.8 rating, the more comfortable option for a woman going alone, priced a little above the pressure-point place.

未來健康養生館 (Wei Lai Health Massage) at No. 988, Guangfu Road Section 2 needs saying plainly: 388 reviews, rated 4.1, which is low for this road. Not a no-go — just know what you are gambling on before you walk in.

None of these close for summer or winter break; the wait simply drops to zero. During term, after 9pm on a Friday, all three may have a queue.

More on East District massage and spa.

STEP 3: A drink, Puding Road or Jinshan Street

Drinking at student prices means NT$500–700 per person for the night. That is a week of meals, so my position is blunt: once a month, on a weekday.

Puding Road sits close to NYCU. Laid Back Bar 來杯酒吧 at No. 3 has 272 reviews and a 4.7 rating — small room, bar seats you can actually get, the easiest entry point on either street. 煑伕 yakitori旨火串烤 居酒屋 (Zhu Fu yakitori izakaya) at No. 30 has 1,093 reviews at 4.9; skewers plus a drink pushes toward NT$700, so save it for a group.

Jinshan Street is Science Park territory and prices follow the Park. Bar Approx. 將進酒 on the second floor of No. 19 has 939 reviews and a 4.8 rating, with cocktails a step up in price — a freshman will find it expensive the first time, and that is normal. 三沐養生館 (San Mu Massage) at No. 15, Jinshan 18th Street is the area’s other massage option if you do not want to walk far afterward.

醺築居酒屋 (Xun Zhu Izakaya) at No. 20, Science Park Road has 701 reviews at 4.6 and is among the closest izakaya to the NYCU Guangfu campus; weeknights seat more easily than Fridays. 廢材串燒酒場 Skewers & Beer 關新店 at No. 159, Guanxin West Street has 2,430 reviews, big portions and prices a notch above Puding Road — consider it with four or more. The full East District bar list has its own page.

Drink, and the scooter stays parked.

Late-night rides around the campuses come slower than downtown, often ten minutes or more after eleven; once the last bus goes, ride-hailing and designated drivers are the only options left. Leave the scooter, walk back for it in the morning.

Line-stop list

Jiangong Road on the first Friday of term: line stop.

The shop at No. 988, Guangfu Road Section 2: not a stop, a derating — the score is right there.

If you want a second round downtown, the station front and Dongmen Market stretch are on the Hsinchu late-night map, but that is twenty minutes by bus and a ride home after; a freshman’s first night does not need to be greedy.

Three stations done, about NT$1,500, seventy percent yield. The remaining thirty you fill in yourself once you know the road.
