Calibrate. Kaohsiung KTV bills run on two systems, four variables on the panel; read them and you know which way to turn.
Panel: four variables
Billing unit — chains per head, self-service per room or hour. Slot — chains cheapest on weekday afternoons, dearest Friday-Saturday eight to dawn, same room up to double; self-service gaps are small but weekend nights still add. Minimum — chains bind it, often with food packages; self-service almost none. Food — chains have buffets or service, a bell brings staff; self-service means fridge, help yourself.
Combined: chain peak per head commonly NT$300–600; self-service commonly NT$200–300. Posted prices rule; formulas differ widely.
Signal one: Zhonghua Road belt, chain HQ
The Qianjin KTV list is essentially Zhonghua 3rd Rd. Party YES KTV Kaohsiung Flagship at Zhongzheng 4th Rd No. 166 — 4.9, 6,100-plus reviews, the most-reviewed and highest-rated chain in the city, walkable from MRT Central Park. Cashbox Kaohsiung Zhonghua New Hall at Zhonghua 3rd Rd No. 151 (1,800-plus), Holiday KTV Zhonghua at No. 11 (1,400-plus), We go Singing at No. 204 (550-plus), the larger non-chain. Four venues within a kilometer; Friday-Saturday the queue order is Party, then Cashbox, then Holiday.
Signal two: self-service, within two kilometers of the station
The Xinxing KTV list is self-service HQ. Super Star Self-Service KTV Kaohsiung Wufu at Wufu 1st Rd No. 106 — 4.7, 930-plus, the most-reviewed self-service room in the city, chain-brand spec on self-service billing. Qiaosheng Self-Service KTV at Liuhe 1st Rd No. 4 (180-plus, 4.3), across from Liuhe Night Market — eat then sing without moving. 333K Song Inn at Lingya Jianguo 1st Rd No. 51 (50-plus, 4.3), smallest. All within fifteen minutes' walk of Kaohsiung Station or Formosa Boulevard. Few people, weekday, budget — readings point here.
Signal three: Sanmin and the outskirts
On the Sanmin KTV list: Silver Cabinet KTV Kaohsiung at Dachang 2nd Rd No. 119-5 (2,100-plus), Cashbox Kaohsiung Jianxing at Jianxing Rd No. 391 (970-plus, 4.5) — north Kaohsiung's chain anchors; Venice KTV Club at Shiquan 1st Rd No. 209 (230-plus, 4.8), non-chain, newer rooms. Fengshan's Warmth KTV Wujia at Fengnan Rd No. 291 (3,200-plus) is south Kaohsiung's most-reviewed chain; Datangdian KTV Dashun at Lingya Dashun 3rd Rd No. 106 (1,200-plus) and Benz KTV Talu, 2F of Qianzhen Zhongqin Rd No. 8 (810-plus), are big non-chain halls. Shared reading for the outskirts: no direct MRT, car required.
Scenario readings
Three people, Wednesday 8pm, two hours: self-service by the hour, commonly NT$600–900 with fridge drinks; chain per head plus minimum, often NT$1,000–1,500. Thirty percent apart — self-service.
Ten people, Saturday 9pm, four hours, eating: chain package with buffet, NT$600–1,000 a head, fed and sung out; self-service big room stacks hourly, drinks self-serve, no hot food. Chain isn't necessarily dearer, and it's easier. Elders, birthday, celebration — chain.
Two people, practicing: self-service, or ask the non-chain small rooms on Zhonghua 3rd. Chain minimums are unkind to two.
Two misreads
"No minimum" as "cheap to the end": self-service weekend nights add, big-room hourly stacks, four hours may exceed expectations — ask the total formula at the door. Slot transition unread: enter a chain at seven, cross into the ten o'clock peak, two bills — settle exit time when booking.
Return signal
Zhonghua belt and Xinxing sit on MRT Formosa Boulevard, Central Park, Kaohsiung Station; Red and Orange lines run to around midnight. Sanmin, Fengshan, Qianzhen — cab or designated driver. Rooms hold more alcohol than you think; hands off the wheel. Chain specs and frontage are in the Kaohsiung KTV guide; the two self-service rooms are split in detail in Kaohsiung self-service KTV.
