Xinying and Jiali: The Night North of the Zengwen River

QUICK ANSWER North of the Zengwen River only Xinying has both a TRA station and a night market. Jiali sleeps early, though the stalls on Yanping Road around Jintang Temple hold into the evening. Arrive between 6:30 and 8:30pm for late food; after nine both towns go quiet. Back to downtown Tainan by local train is about 40 minutes, express about 25. Jiali has no railway, and if you drank, call a designated driver or a taxi.
Warm-paper woodblock map of Tainan north of the Zengwen River: the river as one ink line, Xinying marked by a station and night-market lanterns, Jiali by a temple courtyard, with a night timetable column carved below

This paper turns the page across the Zengwen River. The north bank, Xibei to locals: Xinying, Jiali, Yanshui, Madou. It rarely gets column space in a Tainan night paper, for a simple reason: the night there goes to bed early. The reporter walked both towns on a weekday evening each. Verdict first: Xinying is the only town north of the river with both a TRA station and a night market. Jiali sleeps once it is dark, but a few stalls around Jintang Temple hold out longer than you would guess.

Set out by the clock.

18:30 In front of Xinying station, three roads for dinner

Step out of TRA Xinying station and you are on Zhongshan Road, which runs east into Minquan Road and Sanmin Road. Those three roads are the whole of Xinying’s night. Eateries, fried-chicken stalls, a few stir-fry places, convenience stores, drink stands under the arcades, busiest from 6:30 to 8pm. A bowl of noodles or a bag of fried chicken mostly NT$50 to NT$120, a plate of stir-fry NT$100 to NT$200 or so, all as posted on site.

Xinying night market is not nightly. Opening days are as posted by the organiser, and this paper does not name stalls. On a market night the crowd drifts from the station toward the market; on other nights the three roads in front of the station are all there is.

For small karaoke-style bars, there are a few along Sanmin Road after dark, small rooms, as posted on site. For proper private-room KTV, see the Yongkang KTV page instead.

19:30 Nanying Green Park and the sugar factory, a walk without food

Ten minutes on foot south of dinner, Nanying Green Park has dog walkers and strollers after dark, not brightly lit but quieter than the street. Xinying Sugar Factory is a daytime visit; the narrow-gauge train does not run at night, and after dark there is only the outline of old dormitories and the street lamps. This paper lists the stretch as a reminder: in Xinying at night, beyond eating, the thing to do is walk.

In summer it is not fully dark until eight, so the walk can slide later; in winter it is dark by six and the park lamps look thinner.

20:30 Moving to Jiali, twenty-five minutes on Highway 19

Xinying to Jiali by car is about 25 minutes, by Provincial Highway 19 or the county road. There are buses, few in the evening; the stop timetable the reporter saw that night can only be reported as “as posted”, so do not rest your return on a bus.

Jiali has no railway. Remember that line. It decides how a Jiali night ends.

21:00 Around Jintang Temple, the last lights on Yanping Road

Jintang Temple sits on Zhongshan Road, its courtyard lit at night, and the Yanping Road and Zhongshan Road streets around it are the only part of Jiali with people after dark. What remains: a few food stalls, fried chicken, convenience stores, and one or two foot-massage parlours open later than the rest, NT$300 to NT$500 for half an hour, NT$600 to NT$900 for an hour, as posted on site. Soulangh Cultural Park is a daytime matter; at night only its wall is left.

From 8:30pm the shutters on Yanping Road come down one after another. At nine, Jiali is asleep.

Put plainly, anyone waiting in Jiali for a late night will be waiting under a convenience-store sign. Jiali night market depends on its opening days, as posted; a market night is the exception, and every other night runs on the rhythm above.

21:30 Drinkers, stop here

There is stir-fry and beer in front of Xinying station, and now and then a table on Yanping Road in Jiali opening cans over fried chicken. The house rule, printed as always: the roads north of the river are empty and fast, so nobody who drank gets behind the wheel. Call a designated driver or a taxi, and in Jiali call before you drink because the wait is real. For stir-fry with beer and a ride home, the Tainan stir-fry guide covers downtown options, and Yongkang is far closer to the city.

22:00 Back to the city, or not

Xinying station to Tainan station: local train about 40 minutes, express about 25. The last southbound local is whatever the TRA timetable says that day; this paper suggests boarding before ten, since gaps widen after that and a missed train means half an hour at least. Driving via the Xinying interchange on National Freeway 1 is about 40 minutes to downtown, and Jiali south on Highway 19 is roughly the same 40.

People who live north of the river are home by ten. People who do not should be on the platform before ten.

Local desk note

The night north of the river shares a constitution with the Rende and Guiren page: early to bed, quiet, one porch light left on. The difference is that Xinying has a station, and on a market night it holds until ten; Jiali has no station at all, and after nine only the temple courtyard is lit. For bars, late massage or food at two in the morning, the answer is still downtown, and the ride back is laid out in the Tainan night transport guide. This paper does not tell anyone to make a special trip for a night in Xibei, but for those passing through, the two hours from 6:30 to 8:30pm in front of Xinying station will hold.

NIGHT WEATHER

FAQ

Q-01What is there to eat in Xinying at night?

Zhongshan, Minquan and Sanmin roads in front of TRA Xinying station carry the eateries and fried-chicken stalls, with a bowl of noodles or a bag of fried chicken mostly NT$50 to NT$120, as posted on site. Xinying night market runs only on its opening days, as posted by the organiser; it is not nightly. Shops start closing after nine, so eat early.

Q-02Is anything open in Jiali at night?

Yes, but little. The Yanping Road and Zhongshan Road streets around Jintang Temple keep a few food stalls, fried chicken and convenience stores after dark, and shutters visibly come down from 8:30pm. Jiali night market depends on its opening days, as posted. For a night with lights until late, Jiali is not that place.

Q-03How do I get from Xinying back to downtown Tainan, and when is the last train?

TRA local trains from Xinying to Tainan station take about 40 minutes, express trains about 25. The last southbound time is whatever the TRA timetable says that day; this paper suggests boarding before ten, as gaps widen after that. Driving via the Xinying interchange on National Freeway 1 is about 40 minutes.

Q-04Jiali has no train, so how do I leave at night?

Jiali has no TRA line. It relies on Provincial Highway 19 and buses, and evening bus frequencies are thin, as posted at the stop. In practice leaving Jiali after dark means your own car or a taxi: about 25 minutes to Xinying station, about 40 to downtown Tainan. If you drank, call a designated driver.

Q-05Is the north bank worth a special trip at night?

Honestly, no. Xinying works as a stop on the way for late food because it has a station and a night market; Jiali sleeps early and only makes sense if you are staying nearby or eating after a daytime visit to Soulangh Cultural Park. For bars and late nights, go back to the city.
