Does Yilan Have Nightclubs? No — This Page Answers the Follow-Ups Too

QUICK ANSWER No. Yilan City lists nineteen bars and Luodong thirteen — all bistros, cocktail bars and izakayas, no dance floor, no DJ booth. For dancing, Taipei is about an hour through the Hsuehshan Tunnel. The substitute: night market at seven, old-town bars at nine (NT$300-400 a cocktail), a KTV box at eleven. If you drink, call a designated driver.

Saturday, 11:40 p.m. At 185 Jiucheng N Rd, 芎城餐酒Town bistro is collecting glasses. At the same moment outside a club in Taipei’s Xinyi district, the queue is folding into its second bend.

Does Yilan have nightclubs? No.

This question comes in so often that it deserves one Q&A page, follow-ups included.

Not a single one? Seriously?

Seriously. Yilan City’s listed bars number nineteen, and the category column reads the same all the way down: bistro, cocktail bar, izakaya, whisky club. Luodong’s thirteen tell the same story. Dance floor, DJ booth, cover charge, a room that only warms up at 2 a.m. — the county’s listings cannot produce even one of the four.

The most-reviewed venue of all, 新買醉餐酒館&COZZZY BAR at 168 Fuxing Rd Sec 2, holds 4.9 stars across nearly twenty thousand reviews. Big enough? It is still a bistro. Loud tables, yes. Dance floor, no.

But the map shows places with CLUB in the name?

There are two, and neither is what you are picturing.

HC CLUB 永昇菸酒 at 6 Lanfeng Rd Sec 1, 1F — a perfect score across two hundred some reviews — carries CLUB in its name but is a bar that grew out of a bottle shop; the main event is picking bottles and talking. 威佬 威士忌會所 Whisky Fogey Club at 55 Nyuzhong Rd Sec 3, 4.9 stars across a hundred fifty some reviews, is honest in its name: a place to sit with whisky, where even the music stays polite.

The word CLUB in Yilan is not drawn from the same dictionary as in Taipei.

Why can’t Yilan sustain a nightclub?

The night ends too early. Dongmen Night Market’s stalls fire up at dusk and fold around midnight; once midnight passes, the old-town streets go quiet fast. A nightclub’s golden hours run 1 to 4 a.m. — in Yilan, that is when the whole town is asleep.

Then there is the rain. From November to February the northeast monsoon can keep it falling for a week straight, and queueing outside a door is a concept Yilan’s weather vetoed long ago.

And one piece of local truth: when Yilan people want to let loose, they book a KTV box, not a dance floor. The Yilan KTV guide covers that route in full, so it stays folded here.

So how do I piece a night together?

By relay, not by one venue.

Seven o’clock, eat a lap of Dongmen Night Market in Yilan City — about NT$200 a head. Nine o’clock, the old-town bars take over: Gambling Bar at 212 Shennong Rd Sec 1, a perfect score across nine hundred seventy some reviews, or 芎城餐酒Town bistro at 185 Jiucheng N Rd, 4.8 stars across five hundred some reviews, cocktails NT$300-400 a glass. Eleven o’clock and still standing? A KTV box or late-night food — pick one.

Which door number belongs to which day — weekends, weekdays, live-music nights — the Yilan nightclub guide already laid that out on a weekly calendar. No point copying it here.

Would Luodong be any livelier?

Luodong lists thirteen bars and has a bigger night-market sprawl — still no dance floor.

The Roof 190 星空酒吧, on the R floor of 190 Zhandong Rd, is the closest thing the county has to nightclub energy: rooftop, night view, music turned up louder than anyone else’s. To be clear, its 4.2 stars across five hundred twenty some reviews sit low among the listed bars — what you are buying is the scenery and the mood. Keep drink expectations modest and you will leave happy enough.

Fine, I’m going to Taipei

That is the correct answer. If nothing but a dance floor will do, stop trying to force one out of Yilan.

National Highway 5 through the Hsuehshan Tunnel puts Taipei about an hour from Yilan City; Capital Star and Kamalan buses leave from Yilan Bus Station. The hard part is the return: the last bus leaves early, and when clubs empty out in the small hours your options shrink to a taxi fare or the first morning bus. Staying overnight in Taipei is the practical move. Sunday evening northbound jams in the tunnel are a fixed ritual — double your travel time.

Drinking in Yilan instead? Standing rule: if you drove, install the designated-driver app and save your hotel address before the first glass. Taxis are findable late around Yilan City and Luodong stations, and Jiaoxi is about a twenty-minute ride. On rainy nights the cab takes longer to come — bring an umbrella, and the patience to match.

FAQ

N-01Does Yilan have nightclubs, or am I just searching wrong?

It is not you — there really are none. Yilan City has nineteen listed bars and Luodong thirteen, and the category column reads bistro, cocktail bar, izakaya and whisky club all the way down. No dance-floor-plus-DJ venue exists. Check the listings yourself, entry by entry.

N-02What about the two places with CLUB in their names?

Neither is a nightclub. HC CLUB 永昇菸酒 at 6 Lanfeng Rd Sec 1, 1F — a perfect rating across two hundred some reviews — is a bar that grew out of a bottle shop. 威佬 威士忌會所 Whisky Fogey Club at 55 Nyuzhong Rd Sec 3, 4.9 stars across a hundred fifty some reviews, is a sit-down whisky club where even the music stays polite.

N-03Can I do a Taipei nightclub run from Yilan in one night?

Getting there is easy, getting back is not. Capital Star and Kamalan buses leave Yilan Bus Station and take about an hour, but the last return bus leaves early. When clubs let out in the small hours, your options are a taxi fare or the first morning bus — staying overnight in Taipei usually works out cheaper.

N-04Skipping Taipei — what is the closest thing to nightclub energy in Yilan?

The Roof 190 星空酒吧 on the R floor of 190 Zhandong Rd in Luodong — rooftop setting, music louder than anywhere else, five hundred twenty some reviews at 4.2 stars. That score sits low among listed bars, so go for the view and the mood and keep expectations for the drinks list modest. On the Yilan City side, 新買醉餐酒館&COZZZY BAR at 168 Fuxing Rd Sec 2 has nearly twenty thousand reviews and the fullest weekend crowd.

N-05How do I get back to my hotel after drinking in Yilan?

Taxis are findable late at night around Yilan City and Luodong stations; Jiaoxi is about a twenty-minute ride. If you drove, install a designated-driver app before the first glass. From November to February, the rainy season, pad your waiting time — and carry an umbrella.
