Seven p.m., TRA Yuli Station. The express lets off its last passengers, and a few windows glow along Datong Rd out front — behind one of them, someone is opening a bottle.
Get the rolling stock straight first: the carriage this line pulls is a dining car, not a bar car.
Rolling stock: one dining car, four carriages
臣佳立業餐酒館 CHEN & JIA BISTRO, No. 60-1 Datong Rd — 4.9 stars, 320-plus reviews, phone 03 888 0025. A few minutes’ walk down Datong Rd from the station, and the most-reviewed place in town, any category.
深夜故事餐酒館, No. 32, Sec. 2 Ren’ai Rd — 4.7 stars, 160-plus reviews. The name translates to “late-night story”, which is the business philosophy in full; of the four, this carriage carries the most bar in it.
娟姐廚房J.J.Bistro, No. 382 Zhonghua Rd — 4.5 stars, 120-plus reviews. Home cooking with a drink alongside; the wok breathes louder than the liquor.
綠點酒莊TheGreenFarm, No. 270-13, outside town — 4.8 stars, 40-plus reviews. The address is a bare lot number with no street name, which is itself the hint: you need a car.
Four carriages. There is no fifth. The full list lives at Yuli bars and bistros.
Why a dining car
Because Yuli’s dinner window is short. The old Yuli-noodle shops on Zhongshan Rd and Minguo Rd sell out and shutter by seven or eight; past nine, the whole town is quiet enough to hear the river. Miss the noodle shops and still want something hot, and these four kitchens are nearly all that’s lit — which is why they are dining cars: they feed you first, and the drink rides attached.
Set the expectation where it belongs. A three-page cocktail list and music until two — not here. A table of hot food, a glass or two, and the valley pitch-black outside the window — all of it, here.
The seat chart
A group dinner books 臣佳立業. More tables, closest to the station — drop your bags and walk over without starting an engine.
Two people who want to sit late book 深夜故事. Call 0903 509 230 before heading over; hours per the shop’s own notice.
Bringing elders, 娟姐廚房 — the kind of room where the music never outtalks the table.
Only the designated driver’s party books 綠點酒莊, the carriage outside town: easy to reach, impossible to cab back from late at night.
Put plainly, Yuli’s seating philosophy is one sentence: pick one place and sit it out. The three in-town bistros sit ten-odd minutes’ walk apart, so in theory you could hop — in practice, anyone switching after nine-thirty mostly meets a rolled-down shutter. The night train that stops at only four stations already laid out the timetable; this chart adds only the critical cell: seated by eight, seven is better.
Attached carriages
What else can couple on behind the dining car?
Karaoke: 好樂迪玉里店 at No. 113, Sec. 2 Zhongshan Rd — 4 stars, 110-plus reviews, the town’s only KTV. Massage: 玉享足體按摩 /越式洗髮 at No. 138 Zhongzheng Rd — a perfect score, 150-plus reviews. One more drink isn’t a change of venue — it’s the liquor shop at No. 150 Guangfu Rd, one bottle, back to the guesthouse balcony. Yuli’s version of a second round.
August to mid-September is the exception: the Chike Mountain daylily season fills the mountain guesthouses and the town bistros’ weekends alike — book a week ahead. If you came down after the sunrise, put dinner and that drink in Yuli; the mountain road is steep and winding, and nobody should ride it after dark for a glass.
The northbound ticket
If four carriages aren’t enough, the honest fallback runs one direction: north to Hualien City, about an hour by rail. 文藝復興音樂酒吧 at No. 4-1 Fuxing St carries 3,400-plus reviews at 4.9, Ginsman Bar 琴詩酒吧 at No. 62 Xingang St carries 560-plus — ten times Yuli’s scale. The county-wide local-train ticket has the station order sorted; ride it as printed.
One footnote on that ticket: drink up north, sleep up north — the last train runs per the TRA timetable, and you don’t gamble on it. Staying to drink in Yuli, hand the return to a designated driver or an in-town taxi — supply is thin, so save the dispatch number before you leave.
Tickets checked. The dining car’s lights run shorter than you think — board at seven, and it’s exactly right.
