The Wenlin Road arcade, ten on a Saturday night. Two kinds of people in the queue: the ones with sore feet, and the ones in line at the wrong shop.
There is no best massage shop, only the right one for what hurts. Shilin lists forty-plus; earlier pieces read them by street and by clock. This one reads them by body — sore feet, stiff back, just tired, old injury. Four conditions, four routes.
Sore Feet: the Three Wenlin Road Houses
Night-market soreness belongs to the foot houses.
Sen SPA Foot Massage — Shilin at No. 102 Wenlin Rd.: 4.8 stars, 3,950-plus reviews, the biggest count on Shilin’s list. Hang Foot Massage at No. 135: 3,300-plus, 4.7. Finger Dance of Spring & Autumn — Shilin at No. 69: 1,600-plus, 4.3. An hour on the feet runs about NT$800–1,200, posted rates final.
All three face the night-market exit tide head-on; Friday and Saturday between nine and eleven the wait starts at thirty minutes. Can’t get in? Ming Yi Foot Massage at No. 211 Zhongzheng Rd. — 100-plus reviews, 4.8 — is a few minutes’ walk, fewer beds, usually open.
Stiff Back: Thai, from Zhongzheng Road Out to Yanping North
When the slab runs from shoulders to hips, foot work is useless. You need to be pulled open.
Shilin’s Thai lines up along Zhongzheng Road: Siam Thai Massage at No. 200 — 210-plus reviews, 4.3, two minutes from MRT Shilin Station. Heading west, Chiang Mai Stars — Shilin at No. 622 — 210-plus, 4.7 — and New Thai House at No. 637 — 200-plus, 4.6 — sit far from the night market and run emptier on weekend nights because of it.
The tail end is Sec. 5 of Yanping N. Rd.: Lan Tai Fang Thai Massage at No. 178, 140-plus reviews at 4.5, and Tai He Xuan Thai SPA at No. 186, 140 reviews at a perfect score. That end is already the mouth of Shezi; how people out there choose is its own piece — Shezi massage.
Thai runs NT$1,200–1,800 per 90 minutes. First time? Book 60. Dry stretching isn’t for everyone, and stopping halfway doesn’t get you a refund.
Just Tired: Course-Based, the Dim-Lit Kind
Some days you don’t want to be fixed, you want to be kept. That’s a course-based day.
Right by the station: Jia Bei Li SPA Shilin MRT on the 2nd floor of No. 301 Zhongzheng Rd. — perfect score, 1,200-plus reviews, the only four-digit count on Zhongzheng Road.
Fussier, go up to Tianmu. Eunice SPA Takashimaya flagship on the 12th floor of No. 55, Sec. 2, Zhongcheng Rd. — 600-plus, 4.9. Doll Spa Tianmu at No. 134-2F, Sec. 6, Zhongshan N. Rd. — perfect score, 580-plus. Six Star Massage (Tianmu) at No. 38 Tianmu E. Rd. — 830-plus, 4.3. Mostly course menus, often NT$1,500-plus per person, appointment first; around seven is the last comfortable start, and after nine most won’t take new customers. Tianmu’s Thai side was covered in Tianmu Thai spa — no repeats here.
Old Injury: You Want Treatment, Not Relaxation
The basketball knee, the back that went out lifting — take it to Dr. Bo Sports Massage Taipei Shilin at No. 381 Zhongzheng Rd., perfect score, 100-plus reviews. No listed phone; book online, weekday afternoons are easiest to get.
Sore for a day or two after is normal. Don’t add Thai on top the same day.
Time Slots, Last
Weekday 2–6 p.m.: all four routes are empty and the therapists are at their best.
Friday and Saturday 9–11 p.m. is Wenlin Road at its worst, and Tianmu’s course rooms close their doors to new faces after nine. One plan worth talking you out of: Saturday night, four people, fresh out of the night market, no call ahead — go another day, or phone Sen SPA at 02 2880 7333 first and only walk over if there’s a bed.
