October in Jiaoxi, and the rain starts on Wednesday.
The bath-house signs along the hot-spring street still run in an unbroken line, but what actually keeps Jiaoxi lit to midnight is not the baths. It is the massage trade. Twenty-eight shops on the register, spread very unevenly.
Filing the 28 by street
Sorted by house number, the Jiaoxi massage list comes down to nine streets:
- Deyang Rd, counting Lane 8 and Lane 251 — nine
- Ren’ai Rd — five
- Sec. 5 Jiaoxi Rd — four, closest to Tangweigou
- Jiankang, Zhongxiao, Wenquan and Gongyuan roads — two each
- Heping Rd and Xinyi Rd — one each
Deyang Rd takes a third of the register on its own.
Deyang Rd: the heavyweight sits at No. 28
千歲月足體養生工坊 礁溪德陽店-cash only (Qiansuiyue Foot Wellness, Jiaoxi Deyang branch) at Deyang Rd No. 28 holds 5,428 reviews at 4.9 — the thickest ledger on the street. The two English words at the end of the name are not decoration. They are the rule.
The same brand runs four shops here: 千歲月足體養生工坊 德陽路二店 at No. 16 with 1,455 reviews, 千歲月足體養生工坊 礁溪公園店-cash only at Gongyuan Rd No. 5 with 591, and 千歲月足體養生工坊 溫泉路店 at Wenquan Rd No. 36 with 185.
Further down the same road: 十足養生館 at No. 67, 1,139 reviews; 天龍八步養生館 at No. 57, 803; 元氣健康養生館 at No. 77, 470; 非凡足跡養生館(礁溪館) at No. 55, 188; 松足梅足體養生館 at Lane 8 No. 1, 75.
雅舍spa養生館 at Lane 251 No. 1 carries 2,993 reviews at a full five stars — the only large spa house on this road, and not the forty-minute foot-rub kind.
Ren’ai and Jiankang: the two 素問 halls split the trade
素問足體工坊 at Ren’ai Rd No. 64 has 3,120 reviews; 素問足體工坊(健康二館), the second hall, at Jiankang Rd No. 38 has 3,260. Both sit at 4.9 and the counts are barely a hundred apart.
The second hall is further out from the core of the hot-spring street. Which is exactly why it books better on a weekend.
The rest of Ren’ai Rd is small shops: 足功夫養生館~宜蘭礁溪店 at No. 92 with 588 reviews, 333 莉雷思養生會館 at No. 16 second floor, 金滿足養生會館(仁愛店) at No. 20, and 貴夫人足體養生館 at No. 53 — the last three all under two hundred reviews.
Jiankang Rd No. 77 is 長榮鳳凰酒店(礁溪)-慢活spa (Evergreen Resort Hotel Jiaoxi, Slow Living Spa), 154 reviews at 4.6, and the phone number needs extension 2420. Hotel spa pricing is not on the same line as the street shops, and walking in does not get you a table.
Zhongxiao Rd and Sec. 5 Jiaoxi Rd: the post-soak cells
悠宅SPA養生會館 at Zhongxiao Rd No. 47 has 2,554 reviews and 金滿足養生會館(忠孝店) at No. 91, first floor, has 1,764. Both sit on the Yushi village side, five to ten minutes on foot out of TRA Jiaoxi Station.
On Sec. 5 Jiaoxi Rd: 泰棧舒壓館 at No. 45 with 1,893 reviews, and 湯圍溝按摩-礁溪足體按摩放鬆 經絡推拿 SPA 刮痧拔罐 at No. 59 with 1,490, about a three-minute walk from Tangweigou Hot Spring Park. Also 大腳ㄚ足體按摩 at No. 1-5 with 423 and 米豆容SPA at No. 22 with 58.
For the three hours after you leave the water, this stretch costs the fewest steps.
That leaves three cells: 森心霖養生會館 at Wenquan Rd No. 55 with 634 reviews, 三月三足體按摩 at Xinyi Rd No. 1 with 67, and 湧泉足體健康按摩(請先來電) at Gongyuan Rd No. 20 with 111 — the last name already spells out the rule, which is to call first.
Four shop types, sorted before you open the door
Foot work. Forty minutes to an hour, legs loosened, roughly NT$600-900 an hour with posted prices ruling. Most of the 28 are this.
Spa house. Aroma oil or hot stone, 90 minutes minimum, and you will want to sleep afterwards — 雅舍spa養生館, 悠宅SPA養生會館 and 米豆容SPA all belong here. The Thai-versus-oil distinction has its own page.
Hotel spa. Extension number, advance booking.
Outcall. 悠㛊足體工坊 LINE ID:angelliaa 可到飯店或民宿 at Heping Rd No. 71 with 472 reviews, 唯獨伊家—spa紓壓-飯店預約按摩-礁溪按摩外出式-按摩泡湯 at Deyang Rd No. 221 with 62. Settle the hour and the address first; this is the wrong pick if your room is not even booked.
The cells not to fill
Eight to eleven at night on weekends and long holidays, that row on Deyang Rd means waiting. Two groups ahead of you is two hours.
Staying in Jiaoxi? Shift the session to before four in the afternoon, or take an after-midnight one — plenty of shops work to one or two, and half past eleven is thinner than nine.
Only Saturday night and not staying over? Don’t gamble on it. A local train to Luodong runs about twenty-five minutes, and the local-priced side is a clear step cheaper.
First visit with a single evening to spend: skip the 90-minute oil session. You come off the table undone, and the late food and the foot soak at Tangweigou no longer connect.
Put plainly, you are unlikely to pick the wrong shop among these 28. You are likely to pick the wrong hour.
Two more weeks of October rain. Phone first, then leave the house.
