“Let’s go sing.” In Zhongli, that sentence has two endings.
Nine out of ten end up in a box — 錢櫃 at No. 88 Zhongyang E Rd, or 凱悅 at No. 136 Datong Rd, door shut, world private. The tenth walks downstairs into the basement of No. 645 Yanping Rd, where the light is warm yellow, the microphone rotates, and the person on stage is a stranger.
That tenth place is what karaoke actually means.
The room in the B1
歡唱天地卡拉ok — 420-plus reviews, 4.6.
An open floor, no rooms. Queue a song, wait your turn; sing it well and a hall of strangers applauds, sing it averagely and nobody laughs. The songbook is old — Taiwanese standards, Mandarin hits of the eighties and nineties — deeper than any chain’s new-release chart. Billing is loose: a minimum charge, a few hundred NT per head for a whole evening, posted rates final.
Afternoons are the warm session: regulars arrive with thermos cups, three songs each, applauding one another. Weekend nights run crowded and a mic rotation tests patience. Going alone is entirely normal — it may be the only place in Zhongli where singing solo isn’t awkward.
The box-side roster
For singing behind a closed door, Zhongli’s table reads like this.
The score king is 凱悅 — 3,400-plus reviews, 4.8, the district’s best service and soundproofing. The volume king is 錢櫃 — 4,400-plus, newest equipment, easiest booking. A tier down, 星光大道KTV at No. 8 Fuxing Rd (3,100-plus, 4.0) and 好樂迪 at No. 137 Zhongmei Rd Sec. 2 (2,300-plus, 4.2) hold the student-budget end. Weekend prime time starts around NT$600–900 per head; the Zhongli KTV types-and-prices piece breaks down each house’s billing, and the Zhongli singing overview draws the full map.
How to choose: ten people and a birthday — a box. Two people singing till they’re hoarse — a weekday-afternoon box. One person, or anyone curious about the vanishing thing called a “floor” — the B1 on Yanping Rd.
The alcohol line
Karaoke tables nearly always carry drink, so this section stays.
If you drank, the keys leave your hand. Cabs come quickly around Yanping Rd late at night, a designated driver runs NT$300–500 within town, and a scooter left overnight costs nothing but a walk. Hold that line and singing stays entertainment.
More venues at the Zhongli KTV list; the rest of the night at the district page. Next time someone says “let’s sing,” ask first: a box — or the B1?
