Taichung City Nightlife: Count Heads First — Solo, Two, Four to Six, Ten-Plus

QUICK ANSWER Taichung City nightlife: count heads first. Solo — a bar stool in Central's old town, best from dusk to nine. Two — West District's Greenway, all on foot. Four to six — Henan Rd Sec. 3 in Xitun puts singing and drinking on one street. Ten-plus — book a chain-KTV big room two or three days ahead on weekends. Cab or designated driver if you drink.

Plan Taichung City nightlife by headcount first, district second. One person and ten people are living in two different cities.

Whether each of the eight districts is worth the trip was already ruled on in the Taichung nightlife guide; the hour-by-hour main line is in the Taichung nightlife overview. This piece handles one thing: how many of you tonight.

Solo: take the bar stool, skip the private room

Start in Central. Out of TRA Taichung Station, 春光閣 Springlightbar at Jianguo Rd No. 103 sits at street level — 300 reviews, 4.5. On 24F of No. 111 on the same road, PANO 24高空酒吧 (a high-rise bar, 330-plus reviews) gives you the skyline without needing a table of friends. For live music, Hope Music Bar 台中音樂酒吧 at Zhonghua Rd Sec. 1 No. 185 has 390-plus at 4.9.

Old-town bars are small. For one person that’s exactly right. Dusk to nine is the window.

After nine the lanes thin out and the lighting drops. Main roads, then a cab.

One warning: don’t go hunting for a solo seat in Fengjia. It’s a place for groups — few single seats, and every queue is a cluster.

Two: West District, on foot

Taichung Station to the Calligraphy Greenway is about fifteen minutes by car. The point of West District is that once you’re dropped off, the whole night is walkable. 吳留手串燒居酒屋 勤美店 (skewer izakaya) at Zhongxing St No. 111 has 19,600-plus reviews; after eight on a Friday or Saturday, no booking means a queue. To dodge it, 虎川千代居酒屋-台中勤美店 at Xiangshang N Rd No. 156 has 2,800-plus, and 將軍府日式居酒屋 勤美店 at No. 159 on the same road has 2,200-plus. Dinner with a drink or two runs about NT$600–1,200 each; exact prices follow each venue’s posting.

Most bistros close around midnight. For another round, move to Xitun.

If the two of you want a view more than a drink, ride the MRT Green Line to Nantun: 高空餐酒館 Rooftop XOXO Bistro on 18F of Wenxin S 6th Rd No. 288 has 900-plus at 4.8. Full date routes are in three Taichung date-night routes.

Four to six: sing first or drink first — vote

The easiest headcount to plan for. Also the easiest to argue over.

  • Drinks first: 容燒居酒屋-南屯文心總店 at Wenxin Rd Sec. 1 No. 530, Nantun — 16,000-plus reviews. Book the six-top; the Green Line gets you there.
  • Singing first: 超級巨星自助式KTV 臺中公園店 at Gongyuan Rd No. 195, North District — 3,700-plus. Self-service, billed by the hour, cheapest split between four and eight.
  • Both: 超級巨星自助式KTV 市政河南店 at Henan Rd Sec. 3 No. 109, Xitun (3,200-plus), with Pink.B Bistro & Bar on 7F of No. 120 on the same road — 1,300-plus at 4.9. A few steps between rounds.
  • Night market crowd: Fengjia. 柒息地串燒居酒屋逢甲店 at Fuxing Rd No. 365 has 5,800-plus; sit down for drinks after the market. Saturday from seven to nine is shoulder to shoulder and six people will get separated — agree on a meeting point first.

How the singing bill works is broken down in the Taichung KTV price guide.

Ten-plus: book a room and stop thinking

Ten people walking into any izakaya puts the staff in a bind. Plainly: only a chain-KTV big room can take this headcount.

台中美樂地KTV on 8F, Block B, Lüchuan W St No. 135 in Central has 5,800-plus reviews and is close to Taichung Station, which helps anyone arriving from out of town. 凱悅 YES KTV 台中店 at Taiwan Blvd Sec. 2 No. 16, West District: 7,200-plus at 4.7. 銀櫃KTV旗艦店 at Taiwan Blvd Sec. 3 No. 527, Xitun: 2,300-plus. Book two or three days ahead for Friday or Saturday; call on the afternoon itself and you’ll mostly find small rooms left.

The real headache with ten is leaving. Ten people calling cabs at 1 a.m. means someone gets stranded. Go in two batches, and put whoever drank the most in the first car.

Whatever the headcount, three things hold

The MRT Green Line follows Wenxin Rd and, among the eight districts, reaches Beitun, Xitun and Nantun. Last train is around midnight. Everything else is buses and cabs.

If you drink, the ride home is a cab or a designated driver. Name the non-drinker before leaving; if nobody volunteers, the car stays home.

Then the month. September evenings are still muggy, so heading out after six is more comfortable. From December to February the outdoor seats along the Greenway run cold — ask for indoors when you book.

Headcounts change. Two more show up, three drop out — flip back to the matching section and re-plan. The district is the last thing you decide.

Q2What's the easiest plan for two?

West District. It's about fifteen minutes by car from Taichung Station to the Calligraphy Greenway, and everything after that is on foot. Dinner with a drink or two runs about NT$600–1,200 per person; most bistros close around midnight. Exact hours and prices follow each venue's posting.
